Open lauradereynal opened 9 years ago

lauradereynal commented 9 years ago

Note: This is the second step following the MVP tracked here https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/plan/issues/553

Team: Lead Design: @kristinashu Quality @cassiemc Lead Dev TBD Consulted: @secretrobotron @LauraReynal

Goal: Bring the research reports online

lauradereynal commented 9 years ago

Pasting here an email with @kristinashu for the bigger part of the work (post-MVP)

I found a few example of long form digital storytelling to spark some inspiration: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/wp-sports/2013/02/27/cyclings-road-forward/?hpid=z1 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=Dock-Ellis http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/us/the-way-north.html#p/39 http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2013/10/13/russia/?partner=rss&emc=rss&smid=tw-nytimesworld http://pitchfork.com/features/cover-story/reader/daft-punk/ http://pitchfork.com/features/cover-story/reader/panda-bear/

@kristinashu

Thanks for digging out this great benchmark. It is very inspiring

Open for discussion. Filling out the design brief is definitely a first item on the to do list :necktie:

Hi all,

I think you have the wrong Laura Rey. While I do teach web programming at a university and maintain several content management systems, including a large one for one of the ministries in the province of Ontario, I think perhaps you have the wrong email address.

On a different note, Wordpress is nice option, but may I suggest Joomla as well? The installation is a breeze and it is easily configurable.
Plus, it has several open source /low cost templates. My clients who use it have been pleased with its performance.

Cheers, Laura

Notes from discussion with @davidascher https://github.com/davidascher

  • Let's look at options that will enable us to update the site very easily such as Wordpress. Something that would let me add posts and updates without requiring design / engineering o We could work on creating our own template on platforms such as wordpess or other. o Idea to use gitbook for bringing the reports online - needs discussion o We might not have enough resources to make something like the benchmarks above.

Open for discussion. Filling out the design brief is definitely a first item on the to do list :necktie:

Sorry @LauraRey! Have updated the first comment to reflect the right Laura :) Design brief is here, @LauraReynal http://bit.ly/mozdesignbrief

Inserting myself here just for a bit to provide some more examples of research repository sites you could look at: Deloitte: http://dupress.com/?icid=duplg (I like this. Responsive, looks modern) McKinsey: http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/mgi/research (Better than Deloitte depending on how much of the content you want to show) Personally dislike the next two, but here they are anyway: BCG: https://www.bcgperspectives.com/ Bain: http://www.bain.com/offices/bcc/en_us/publications/index.aspx

My personal favourite for interactive long-form report / post has to be this: http://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2015-paul-ford-what-is-code/ Only 38,000 word essay I have actually read beginning to end. Kept me engaged! However, this looks like something that needs a lot of effort to setup.

Hope this helps. If I am off the mark, I am sorry for interrupting! :)

lauradereynal commented 9 years ago

thanks @bhuvanshri this is great to benchmark :)

@cassiemc @kristinashu We have written the design brief for this project : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_DfvKMSTkcwlzH-Gott3rfVRp2jp55_1KWrcG4mCfy8/edit#heading=h.jbz17smj50rl We would love your feedback !

We had a discussion with @simonwex who suggested we use Ghost.io and create a customized template.

Let's meet to discuss next steps and see how we can bring this project to life.

@secretrobotron this bug has a bunch of great benchmarks from Kristina and Bhuvan. This is the Phase 2 ticket.

cassiemc commented 8 years ago

pinging myself here to take a closer look again. @cassiemc

Notes from a quick chat w/ @cassiemc:

Thanks for moving this forward.

Regarding the 3rd point, I dont think this impacts the design. What we want is a place online to publish reports and findings and blog posts and numerous media. If the research council has a report to publish on net neutrality or economics of the web, it can still go there. I suggest we move forward as planned, and I doubt the research council will be a problem :cat:

love the last point and cannot wait to see this :+1: :cat:

Thanks everyone !

When TPS regroups in January, let's try to give this ticket one of the orange labels so we can understand where it fits in the grand scheme of things.

OpenMatt commented 8 years ago

moving to next milestone as per @simonwex suggestion

simonwex commented 8 years ago

@secretrobotron I'm actually going to remove the milestone here. When you're back from India, feel free to inject it back into the process.
