Key Contacts:

Jeffrey Elkner: jeff@elkner.net "Kevin Cole dc.loco@gmail.com Mayra Villanueva: mayra.alejandra.villanueva@gmail.com Chris Hedrick: christopher.m.hedrick@gmail.com Lucia Arce: lucia.karina.arce@gmail.com"

Mission Statement:

We can't say it any better than our friends in Bangalore did, "To transform the learning landscape by empowering youth and educators to enact Connected Learning through a diverse network of civic and cultural institutions." We grew out of a high school in Arlington, Virginia, and our local Code for America civic hacking group, Code for NOVA. A few of us are old timers who have been free software / open educational resource activists for 20+ years. Others are high school students new to technology. Together we hope to help change the world! ;-)

Core Organizations:

"http://codefornova.org/ http://novawebdevelopment.com/ http://dc.ubuntu-us.org/ (the now largely defunct community two of us come from) http://proyectojuanchacon.blogspot.com/"

Core Stakeholders: "Code for NOVA (http://www.meetup.com/Code-for-NoVA/) National Science Foundation (that hosts our weekly meetup) Arlington Public Schools NOVA Web Development (the small tech coop we are in the process of building) Northern Virginia Community College Gallaudet University"

Funding Opportunities: • This is definitely our weak spot, but we have partners who can provide lots of resources like places to meet, used equipment, etc.

We are having our first event, an "Introduction to Firefox OS App Development" workshop at our National Day of Civic Hacking event (http://www.meetup.com/Code-for-NoVA/events/222056228/). After that we will be working on curriculum development and app development.

Followed Up on: June 10th to set up time to do team call

Team Call Updates:

The team is very knowledgable when it comes to tech and app development and have been really involved in this Discourse thread: https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/t/a-firefox-curriculum-for-computer-science-principles/2254/3

The group have a strong interest in code education and civic hacking and much of their community partners are from this background. However, they do have a strong connected to a local community college and their local school board.

In our next office hour call, I asked if we could walk through their SWOT from the Fundraising Tool Kit.

E-mail from Jeff Elkner regarding check in for Hive D.C:

Hi Simona,

Since we are going to be centered around an educational institution, at least to start, it may make more sense to wait until the end of August / beginning of September when the new school year starts. I'm available any time this week if you want to do a team call, however.
