Held first community meet up on February 27th with a great turn out. This meet was to bring together potential members and discuss the next steps for Hive Manchester
Damien and Steven sent me a quick note that would like a call with me this week to discuss creating a membership process
Since Mozfest, the Hive Manchester team has met with their local city council
Support Requested and Provided Sent the team the Hive Community slide deck and encouraged them to individualize it to better suit their needs.
Provided them Hive Toronto membership document package (Kathryn has been great with allowing me to pass it around) and Hive Chicago membership documents to give them a better understanding of how the process can be developed
Team has asked to do a monthly follow up meeting
Call with Hive Manchester on Thursday 9 AM ET. Invited them to speak to April 16, 2015 Hive Global Community call to discuss their current events.
Community Meeting: May 20, I will be skyping in
Great to hear from you. I've attached the call for proposals but there's a fair bit to go through, so here's a summary:
We've been encouraged to apply for the fund, specifically for the Hive, by senior colleagues in Manchester City Council who are driving the city's digital skills agenda.
It's a 'Pilots and Innovation' fund, aimed at finding new ways of buillding skills among young people (14-19 being a target age group) that could lead to apprenticeships. In our case, this means apprenticeships in digital. While we don't see this a Hive Manchester's sole focus, it's an important aspect of what we want to do and fits our city's needs.
The total fund is £550k, to fund several projects. We envisage requested about £100k to fund my and Steven's time for a year, in establishing the Hive, running pilot activity, building partnerships, researching need and, of course, collaborating with the global Hive community.
This work will build on what we've been doing for the past few months and years, allowing us to spend focused paid time, not just volunteer time as we've done so far.
The deadline is quite soon (the fund has a short timescale) - this Monday 10th August.
As word limit - there are a number of sections where we could include a quote, with word limits of 750 - 1500, so we have space for a few lines if that works for you.
As for wording - we don't have a model for what we'd like you to say and we think an authentic endorsement in your own words would be most effective. If we were to suggest a couple of things though:
Innovation is key, so the funders wnat to know that this is a 'first' for a UK city - and that Hive is widely recognised as a highly innovative concept
The funders want to know that the people they are investing in have a track record, even if the organisation is new. Any words about the time we've worked with you since Mozfest came to the UK and our commitment to the Mozilla movement would be great. You may recall that Steven runs a highly successful CoderDojo in Manchester and consults globally on Open Data (among other things - I probably haven't done you justice Steven). As for me, I made links with Mark Surman and the MozFest team for DigitalMe, where I had a key role in setting up and gaining funding for their UK-wide digital badges work.
Is there any research evidence you could add or reference, about the effectiveness of other Hives in promoting digital skills that lead to economic wellbeing?

Followed up with Stevie Flow about grant update, he has not received anything yet but Damien P will get word first but he is currently on his honeymoon.
I connected Steven with Sue Smith today (of Hack Aye in Scotland). She's working on a project that combines art, activism and digital skills, where young adults (ages 18-25) will learn about the open web and leadership. Chris suggested the connection, given proximity and interest areas...
Damien and Steven will be attending Mozfest 2015. New e-mail address:

Note from Damian: December 20, 2015
Hello Simona,
I hope you're really well - it was wonderful to meet and spend some time with you at Mozfest, an inspiring experience as ever.
For now I just have a quick question: are we OK to call events we run 'Mozilla Hive' events? We think that using the Mozilla name will be really attractive to our community, if that's OK.
Did I share with you the great video from our 'Hack Manchester Junior' event? If not here it is: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNArih2SMAMoVex51AkzW7zVgBfw1COHX
Thanks and speak soon.
