After having sent the author an email https://github.com/MrBertie/pagequery/blob/2a106300535e70008418ec5cd79ecdd1022eb1f0/plugin.info.txt#L3 in April and May of this year I can nog longer wait and have forked this repo to https://github.com/mprins/pagequery to work on php8/DW master support.
I will shortly update https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:pagequery to point to that fork
