I bought a used PixelBook 2017(16G/512GB), which is an engineering sample. Its serial number is something like ABC-123-XYZ-456. The "original" firmware is 4.14(2021.08.06). The shipped OS is Win 11 and Everything works.
On the first day, I booted to Ubuntu liveCD(22.04) from a USB disk attached to the right USB port. Everything works. But when I installed the Ubuntu to the internal harddisk, the touchpad and keyboard did not work anymore... I thought It was the firmware problem.
On the second day, I booted to Ubuntu liveCD( as everything works under this environment) and updated the firmware to the latest. Then I found the right USB port did not work anymore, either data transfer or charge.
On the third day, I downgraded the touchpad firmware under Ubuntu liveCD successfully, but without luck, the keyboard and touchpad still did not work.
Today, I figured out how to restore to Stock firmware and ChromeOS, then updated the touchpad firmware to Stock. The keyboard and touchpad still did not work under ChromeOS.
Summary:
Windows 11 works under both firmware(4.14 and the lasted).
Ubuntu liveCD works under both firmware(4.14 and the lasted).
The keyboard and touchpad do not work under Ubuntu(not liveCD), with both firmware(4.14 and the lasted).
The keyboard and touchpad do not work under ChromeOS(Version 120-126), with stock firmware.
there's not much I can do to support 3 year old firmware, but there's no reason basics like the keyboard and touchpad shouldn't be working OOTB under any modern Linux OS
