I've got the above-mentioned laptop, with an Nvidia GT540M, 8GB of RAM and an i7-2720QM, running Xubuntu 11.04 64-bit. And just a notice, the BIOS of this laptop has NONE, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA options regarding the video card. It's literally the most basic BIOS I've ever seen, and that includes computers from the early 90's. There are no options of any significant kind.
So far, bumblebee has only helped me streamline turning the card off, which is where I want most of the time.
First a more recent issue. I've got the PPA setup, and the second-most-recent version would automatically turn the card off at startup, and back on at shutdown, (required for this laptop, if the card is disabled on shutdown during a reboot, it disappears from lspci until the laptop is powered down, the card turns back on at reboot even though it can't be seen) and it worked pretty seamlessly. The version I have now is 2.1.0-1~nattyubuntu3, and it has broken this behavior. I have to manually issue "modrpobe acpi_call", and then issue "nv off".
Second issue, is no matter the version of bumblebee I've used, switching has NEVER worked. My main use is VLC, which when playing 30fps videos, does not update the screen quickly enough, (you can see a frame update line slowly crawling down the screen) The below text is the output of "optirun64 vlc".
