The intel drivers provide enough power for compositing. If you want to get the maximum graphical power, you need your second card, the nvidia one. Bumblebee enables you to use that card for applications, but is currently not ready for use (the power scripts needs to be removed). Expect the next release to fix these issues.
You do not need to install the additional nvidia drivers if you are not going to use them (for Bumblebee for example)
I got it working on a Dell xps15 in this way:
Right now there's a bug in oneiric that pushes up to 30% power comsumption of sandy bridges. adding the line i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 to boot parameters solved this for me. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/818830
Thanks guys :)
Please try the new version here : https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee. Note that you have to make a workaroung for VirtualGL if you're using 64bit.
Hi, I just downloaded/installed the new Alpha 3 of Oneiric. I tried installing Bumblebee which (surprisingly) already has an Oneiric ppa but when I restarted the laptop the login screen took an age to appear and when it did, it hanged in the middle of typing my password.
So I rebooted into the recovery version and removed Bumblebee through the console, rebooted and, this time, was able to login perfectly fine.
I also noticed that the Intel already had acceleration (compiz works fine) without BumbleBee installed.
So...finally...my question is, is it worth trying out BumbleBee at the moment or should I just wait for the beta versions?
I was also notified of "Additional Drivers", namely Nvidia and 3D Nvidia drivers. Obviously these won't work without BumbleBee so is it best just to leave them?
