You can force players into a channel on login using the info node for that,
found on the permission nodes page.

so it would be a permission added to group along the lines of
"towny_default_modes.towny.chat.channelname"?

No, its an info/option/meta node:
http://code.google.com/a/eclipselabs.org/p/towny/wiki/PermissionNodes#Info/Optio
n_Nodes
You give that to the group in question and it will place them into that channel
on join.

Ok just wanted to make sure I'm going about this right. To add regular players
to the global channel would be "/pex group member set towny_default_modes
global"? So if I make custom channels to townychat, say a trade channel, would
it be "/pex group member set towny_default_modes trade" or does townychat only
support those default channels to be used as an value for the
towny_default_modes option?

Figured it out, range detection doesn't alert you to when no one is around so
don't think I'm going to use townychat anyways.
