It makes sense for some items to output more than one item when they finish decaying. A potato may give one "rot" when decaying, while a hamburger gives two rot, and a feast item gives 3. In short: Allow specifying stack size of output of rot per food item.
This could also have a default handling where number of output items is based optionally based on hunger restoration of the food.
