Would be useful as a connectbot-specific controllable option, but users will
need to
be able to decide when, how, and if they want to use it with connectobot --
since it
could easily get in the way. Actually, even deciding how to best display it in
connectbot for those who would want to enable it would seem non-trivial.

This is a critical issue for people with the HTC Magic. Not having onscreen
keyboard
support is a show-stopper.

@jan.aerts, I assume they are coming up soon with a new release that works with
HTC
Magic as it works if you try latest apk. If you dont want to wait official
release
unistall the one from Market and install latest build from this site. I
installed
r221 and it worked on my HTC Magic.

It's in the works. If you download one of the latest releases, it's a little
bit better.

Just a little question: Maybe I'm dumb, but even if I can make the virtual
keyboard
to show up by pressing menu key for a long time, I don't know how to send the
command
line I've just typed... Has anyone figured out how to do that yet?
PS: Sorry for the mistakes, English is *not* my first language.

If you installed the Market version before the version that supports the
software
keyboard, you'll have to do the following:
1. In Host List, select Menu and then go "Settings"
2. Scroll to "Rotation mode" and select
3. Select "Default"
That should make the screen be in Portrait mode which will present the keyboard.
I'm not sure why it doesn't behave the same in Landscape, but I'll look into it
as
time allows.

I've installed this app just this morning, so unless there is some kind of delay
between french and american android Market, I think my version is up to date.
Once you've typed your command (ls for instance), how to you make the shell to
execute it ?

I uninstalled the Market version and istalled the most recent revision of
connectbot
(five days ago, r221) and it works fairly well.
So, until they come out with a stable release with support for the Magic's
virtual
keyboard, the best thing for us is to uninstall the Market version and install
the
"unstable" revisions.
(thanks to the developers for this great and really essential app)

The latest snapshot available on this wiki works just fine, thanks a lot for
the tip!
And, of course, thanks to the devs, this is a really usefull app for anyone who
runs
a server!

I have installed the r236 version.
It works well with virtual keybord but screen is locked vertically.
It would be nice to set it horizontally, to have larger and lower keyboard, and
larger lines on screen.
Or maybe the search button could be used to make the virtual keyboard
(dis)apparear ?
(In both horizontal and vertical configuration in my craziest dreams).
And thank you for this amazing app, it makes Android powerfull

You can set the rotation mode as referenced in Comment 10. Note that in the
horizontal configuration, very few lines are visible making it nearly unusable.
Conceivably one could make a new software keyboard that saves space, but it
would do
so at the increased likelihood of typing errors because the keys would be very
small.
Any discussion about it should probably take place on the ConnectBot-users
mailing
list or on some other Android or Android input method related list since the new
software keyboard style wouldn't necessarily be part of ConnectBot.

thanks for the tip, didn't see it. But II cannot go to settings, the application
crashes when I try to go (I jsut noticed this).
But sometimes I open a ssh session in horizontal configuration. (don't know
why).
IMO, if the search button where used to switch the keyboard on/off it would be
great.

Am I missing something obvious? I've successfully compiled 236 and it runs
fine in
the emulator, and the soft keyboard appears for host info entry. But after
connecting to a host, nothing I do can make the soft keyboard appear in either
orientation! What's the trick? Thanks.

Ah, I see. Hmmm. Not sure how this will work on connections brought up purely
from
certs -- no easy way to toggle the soft keyboard on or off...

On the htc touch, the soft keyboard will come up if you HOLD the menu button.
But
you can't press enter. Or, see what you're typing.

Is it possible to send "TAB" with a virtual keyboard ?

@developers: Great job! I got my Magic today, and the SSH app was one of the
first
things I searched for. Thanks for connectbot!
@all: Setting the rotate mode to "auto" did the trick for me.
@JeanMichael.Bea: I am using Ctrl-i (press trackball, then i ) for TAB. No idea
of a
better method.
@developers: I did the following.
1. logged in
2. changed to landscape by rotating my phone
3. navigated to the directory of choice
4. did "vi filename", but only saw two lines of the file
5. so, I rotated back to portrait. However, the number of lines on the display
is now
set to only 2 (or 3). Any suggestions on how to get it back to a larger number,
now
that I am back in portrait mode?

I tried r292 from this site and the keyboard works really well.
One request might be for the app to remember the terminal dimensions when
they're set
by the user via the "Force Size" menu option. I find setting the height to 8
lines
to be necessary when in landscape orientation, and this is perfect for allowing
room
for the keyboard. At the mo, I need to reset the size every time I log in.
Minor issue though.

Vertical works fine with keyboard, but horizontal has a problem. Your typed
text
continues to scroll down under the keyboard. You can's see what you are typing
after
the first couple of lines, Vertical auto scrolls correctly however.
Thanks.
