HTC Magic Issues (Assorted) #163

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Here are assorted issues with Connectbot 1.5.4 on the HTC Magic.

1) In landscape mode, it is impossible bring up the onscreen keyboard. In
portrait mode the keyboard is up by default, but if you dismiss it, you
have to restart the session.

2) In Menu->Settings various labels are too long for portrait mode. For
example one is forced to set "Remember keys in mem".

3) Various menus and shortcuts refer to the G1 specifically. For example
the "camera button" setting. There is not HTC Magic equivalent.

4) In a session, there is no keyboard help in the menu, and thus no
(obvious) way to learn shortcuts (like the all important "double click the
wheel to send ESC in vi".

5) The hint "long press on your andriod desktop to create direct shortcuts"
does not work.

6) No matter how many times I update to 1.5.4, Andriod reports "update
available" every few days.

1) Are you long-pressing the Menu key? The reason it doesn't come up in
landscape
automatically is because it covers the screen and people complained about
ConnectBot
misbehaving; however, I can't change the behavior of the OS.

2) I know; it's even worse in other languages.

3) Yes, we should probably detect whether you have a camera button.

4) Yes, it's just in the host list, but I could add it to the Console activity.

5) Does it not bring up any context menu when you do this? It should bring up a
context menu where you can select from several programs and ConnectBot should
be one
of them.

6) What is the version when you do Menu->Help on the Host List?

About 3, ad hoc keymapping for magic would be nice probably.
e.g. there is no right shift to produce the "Tab" key (afaik)

Re: 1. Long pressing menu key? No. I would never have thought to. I pressed
MENU
and expected a menu item such as "bring up keyboard". Also the inconsistency
between
landscape and portrait mode is weird.

Sorry, I didn't design the way the virtual keyboard in Android works. I think
they
acknowledge it's a 'hack.'

In order to give something moderately more discoverable, the development
version will
display a keyboard icon if you tap on the screen. When you press that keyboard
icon,
it will bring up the virtual keyboard.

I'm closing this issue. I've opened up Issue 182, Issue 183, and Issue 184 from
various subparts of this ticket.
