Configurable key bindings #176

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start ConnectBot.
2. Select the "Settings" menu item.
3. Look for "configure key bindings."

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect to find "configure key bindings." Instead find more limited items
"directory shortcuts" and "camera shortcut."

What version of the product are you using (you can see this by using Menu
-> About in the Host List)?
1.5.4

What type of system are you trying to connect to?
n/a

If you are able to connect, what is the output of "echo $TERM", "uname -a",
and any other relevant information on the host?
n/a

Please provide any additional information below.

I don't think it's necessary to go totally overboard here, but it would be
nice if one had more freedom in configuring what the various special keys
and buttons are bound to. For example, I personally resolve the
Emacs-vs-Screen ctrl-a issue by rebinding the Screen command key to be
ctrl-\. So, it'd be swell if I could, say, bind the camera key to be that
instead of ctrl-a. As another example, I think I'd prefer to bind the
search key to be ctrl and the right-alt key to be meta.

Thanks for your consideration and for all your efforts to date.

This is definitely high on the list (and most likely a dupe to issue 12). I
have it
halfway finished in a Git branch, but I'm not totally satisfied with the UI for
configuration.

I might consider speeding it up if the mysterious origins of your nickname were
revealed to me at some future point in time. :-)

Thanks go to you as well.

Your comment on issue 12 made it sound more like a graphical thing than a
physical
key thing, which is why I erred on the side of filing a new issue. But in any
case,
as long as it's on your radar, I'm happy.

As for my nickname, I will oblige you in person should we ever meet, but let me
warn
you that it's more interesting *not* knowing.

I'm also hoping for this soon. Any update?? This seems to be a rather hold
functional
suggestion. and MUCH needed. Ideally I'd like to use finch with connectbot,
however
at this time it seems impossible without being able to change the key bindings.
 I've
tried changing the finch keybindings but I can't get the droid keyboard
(slideout) to
work with it. Please??

Note that the Motorola Droid has a / key on the hard keyboard.

Having / bound to the right-hand alt key is superfluous in this example; being
able to
bind that to, eg, \ would be awesome.

I use alt way more often than ctrl (irssi), so it'd be nice if I could set
scroll wheel single-click to alt, then double-click to ctrl.

On my motorola cliq all of the alt keys are jacked so I would like to be able
to bind them to their correct characters. For instance, the forward slash is
instead bringing up ; which is probably what is above the n on a G1. I can't
even fine the forward slash actually and have to resort to using the software
kb when I need one.

I'd like to add that I hope the Keyboard configuration is done in a generic
way, without special cases.

If a new device with a hardware keyboard comes out which sends some esoteric
keycode, I'd like to be able to configure a string or keyboard modifier.

An example is the Tab-Key on the Desire Z, and the special action keys on Droid
2/Desire Z.

I'm VERY interested in this too. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Tab with the
hardware keyboard which HAS keys labeled "Ctrl" as well as an unlabeled extra
key with no function tied to it. It would be EXTRA awesome to be able to use
the CTRL key (which, under ConnectBot, just sems to replicate the key that
toggles the onscreen keyboard key (pops up and puts away the software keyboard).

PLEEEEEEEEASE allow me to assign "unknown" keys to something useful! Thanks!
:)

So, for those of us without a physical keyboard or camera button (HTC Evo,
Viewsonic GTablet).. It'd be great to be able to map the Volume keys as well.

A good default for this would be: Vol-Up -> Escape, Vol-Down -> Tab

But configurable of course.

Thanks!

I still say that it's better to be able to choose ANY key (volume key or
otherwise) to map to a function. (i.e. the best way to do it, in my opinion is
the way "yongzh" binds ANY key to a keypress in his *oid emulators.) I don't
like being limited to only certain keys. Ask me which key to bind ESCAPE to,
let me press a key and BAM! That's ESCAPE. Ask me which key to bind TAB to,
let me press a key and BAM! That's TAB. And so on.

I agree with the previous comment (#11). It would be amazing to map out the
volume keys to whatever we need. I think tab and ctrl are two that are a must
for any ssh user.

I wodehouse fonate cash, time or whatever is needed to be able to bind a key to
tab. No tab key is a deal breaker for me because I use tab auto complete
constantly.
