Miscellaneous cleanups #96

These are some cleanup efforts I was doing a couple weeks ago and didn't push, there was further to go but I don't think I have time. No worries if this doesn't get merged before tomorrow though.

the verify script for removing external_visit_id should really get filled in probably.
