Error code -1 Game wont even Launch #1900

A friend and I are currently running and FTB server using Infinity 1.7.10, we decided to see if we can get our players to swap to MultiMC to allows us to add some QoL mods to the pack that isnt so easily doable through FTB itself. We also straight up like MultiMC more. Anyways, he made a copy of his infinity pack zipped it and uploaded it (as we are going to use an original copy to allow us to make changes then push it to our users) his works on his end however mine does not. They have identical folder sizes with the exception that I seem to have 1 extra file that he doesn't. First issue is MultiMC does not always seem to want to extract the zip not exactly sure why but I get a "failed to commit instance" then if I just keep trying it just decides to randomly work, I'd ball park it around 1/10 tries. After I do finally get the instance to import in I get the Error code -1 for the launcher itself game never actually runs.

System Information

MultiMC version: MultiMC 5 - Version 0.5.0-945

Operating System: Windows 7 x64

Summary of the issue or suggestion: Error code -1 on launch issues committing a copied instance as well.

What should happen: In theory we should be able to just copy a version of the instance and push it to our users they commit, launch and jump right in

Steps to reproduce the issue (Add more if needed):

  1. Get copied version of instance from friend

Suspected cause:

A missing / corrupted file, or a bad pathway due to the copying process

Additional Info:

The server itself is completely private we have always wanted an easy way to have custom / semi-custom server and this would allow us to do so. Also like to note this is just regular old infinity we haven't even added anything yet, there's not really any reason it shouldn't work. Normal infinity from the ftb folder works via MultiMC but we cant figure out why the copied version does not.

Lots of missing libraries there. Are you launching it with a valid premium account and in online mode?

Yes its my actual account. And I am launching in online mode. I tried offline got the same error.

Right. This is weird. You have the files from Mojang, but are missing files from Forge.

This is made from a tracked FTB pack? Remove the pack version in the versions page and add real Forge.

This pack was made from the Official FTB launcher Infinity 1.7.10 pack. literal copy n paste. Will try your suggestion and update in just a min.

Edit: looking in Versions there doesn't actually seem to be "forge" there at all unless LWJGL is Forge. Nvm Google is your friend LWJGL is java

Edit Update: recommended version of Forge is now installed same error is still returned

What do you mean by copy & paste? Did you use the copy button in MultiMC or something else?

He used the "Export Instance" feature aftering copying the instance since MultiMC wont allow you to export from the FTB folder.

Alright. Make sure to replace the version info. MultiMC can't really turn the JSON files FTB uses into something that can be reliably used elsewhere.

What do you mean by "replace the version info"? is that something I do on my end or would he be able to do that so when we push its easier for our players to just plug n play.

Let's say you start with the tracked Regrowth pack: image Then make a copy: image Then remove the pack-specific package/version: image Then add Forge/Liteloader/whatever needed: image

Attempting launch right now its grabbing library files from mojang currently.

Edit Update: not sure whats going on it's been about 5 min. it seems to be hanging? Not sure if it is or its just moving really slow. It jumped to this point in 5 seconds and has just been sitting here http://kherune.com/1495563059.png Edit update2: can confirm it did hang

Also Peterix Thank you I'm currently launched the only problem now is my forge version seem sot be wrong going to update that and will check back. But the MultiMC portion seems to be fixed.

Instance commit happens at the very end of the import, it's basically moving the finished instance folder from a temp folder to instances/. I'm not sure what could interfere with it.

not sure the original one we just messed with that you were helping me with was having issues committing, it would only randomly work like 1 out of 10 times if that. He's currently making a better commit I guess and we're gonna try that one more time. But neither of us either see a reason why it wouldnt commit especially being a direct export out of MultiMC to drobox / google drive then to me.

Hey Peterix - I'm Kherune's friend who is hosting the server. I am uploading a new instance with the changes you guys did now. What I noticed during export is that the object.json file was not there previously while trying to export, so it may have all been a part of the same issue...I am going to try pulling it down on a test machine as well and will update shortly.

So I reuploaded the file to Dropbox. When I download and attempt to add the local file OR when I try to pull directly from the link, I get the Unable to commit instance. I moved MultiMC into a different folder on a different drive, thinking it could be permissions related if all it's doing is moving from the temp folder, but still getting the same error.

So working with the new export, will confirm that it errors for the commit. Deleted the temps after first attempt , still failed, watching the folder during the commit process the temp folder shows up then instantly removes itself and I get the error on commit.

One that just decided to randomly work was called "gurthyyMC 2nd test" Tried again at his suggestion of no spaces and that didn't work. The only other issue is now that we have an instance that doesn't always commit but when it does it crashes when we're at our house but that's likely something with a render on our end. We're running through our crash log file right now for the crash issue.

Edit: seems to be something with Optifine as he defaulted all settings so people can work their own out and in doing so seems to have enabled multithread in optifine which seems to be causing the crash. It was optifine set to "smooth" for Rendering was reset back to default everything is now working and on game side we arent crashing still kind of working to check commits those still seem to be wonky.

Someone had an issue with using non-ASCII characters in the instance name. I couldn't really reproduce the problem though. It was the letter ä on a Swedish version of Windows I think... Which should be prefectly fine. It's basically moving an already existing folder one level up.

Check the MultiMC.0.log.

It has two chances to return false, one leaves a log entry. So, look for that.

So, it's the final rename/move. That's strange.

I guess there are some magical things to try... because it's just black magic from here on. The fact that it is random and sometimes works would suggest something else is interfering.

  1. Try in some other folder that's not Downloads.
  2. If you have some antivirus/anti-whatever solution running, try to disable it temporarily, just in case it's interfering by locking the files in place.
  3. You could try the develop version of MultiMC, but I'm not sure if that would be any different: https://files.multimc.org/downloads/mmc-develop-win32.zip

Disabling anti-virus worked. the .Zip was in downloads commit worked every time (tried 4 times) on the current stable build of MultiMC.
