missing wallet #656

Open spider1972 opened 9 years ago

spider1972 commented 9 years ago

Bug report Operating System:windows 7 MultiBit Version:0.5.18 Steps to replicate the problem:refreshed transfers and block-chain updated the wallet address is missing along with all transactions i tried all steps in trouble shooter nothing has worked

ghost commented 9 years ago

If your wallet is missing entirely, have a look for it on your disk and open it with 'File | Open". It will then re-sync and you should see your transactions.

If you created it in the default directory, open MultiBit and look in the messages tab. The directory called the 'application data directory' should be where it is stored. If you stored it somewhere else then you might have to search for it.

Did you manage to recover your wallet files?

rucksack424 commented 9 years ago

This same exact thing happened to me too. I'm on here now trying to get to the bottom of it. I haven't posted my own section yet. I saw this, and see it is happening to other people too. I thought I got hacked. I opened my wallet, and my old wallet with the old transactions and passwords were gone, and a brand new one that had never been used before was in its place. I use libertyx which keeps the addresses you've sent to. I checked it on blockchain.info, and sure enough all the bitcoin I had in it got transferred to a new address where it still sits today. I have a screenshot of the transfer. I don't think I was hacked. I think multibit has a bug that exported my wallet to this address, and now I can't access my bitcoin. If I were hacked, the hacker wouldn't have taken my whole wallet, just my bitcoin. So what multibit support doesn't seem to want to acknowledge is that you can't retrieve your back up, because the bug exported your old wallet and installed a new wallet in its place. So now your new wallet backup is where your old backup is supposed to be. Because just like spider1972, I've opened every single thing the help contents has said, and there is nothing. It is gone. Well, not gone. I know right where it is. I just can't get to it. If I need to eat the $300 this cost me, then I can make peace with that. But I'm nearing that same amount again in my new wallet, and if this happens again, I'm going to lose my mind. I need to know this bug is fixed. Also, if I could get my old wallet back, that would be great. I know that password if that helps, but I doubt it will. From what I understand you need the key, not the password, and that seems to be gone. bitcoin transfer ](

gary-rowe commented 9 years ago

MultiBit cannot send bitcoin without your consent (through a password prompt and button click). It definitely won't just export keys without your knowing about.

Can you verify the following:

At this stage I strongly suspect an attack against your wallet files. There are several known bitcoin stealing malware applications for Windows and we need to eliminate this from our enquiries.

jim618 commented 9 years ago

Note also that if your wallet is encrypted, you will have automatically generated encrypted exports of your private keys that you can use to regenerate your wallet. These are generated when you add a password, change a password or add a receiving address.

See the link 'file locations' Gary posted above.

If you are seeing brand new transactions that you never sent then malware or someone else who has your password/wallet are possible candidates.

rucksack424 commented 9 years ago

I was finally able to enable hidden directories and checked in the file locations in my user data directory, and my old wallet is still no where to be found. I can confirm that I was using a password protected wallet. As far as I can tell, and I may be wrong, the file locations (for the old wallet) are gone. They have been replaced by files for the new wallet. The only way I can describe what happened is I opened multibit, and it was as if it had been re installed, and I was opening it for the first time. I know there is no way I re installed it. And even if I did, it wouldn't explain that transfer on blockchain for the exact amount I had, at about the exact time I found out about this. The only thing I can think to do is take it to geek squad and see if they know. I'm at the point that I can write off the $300 as painful as it is. But the reason I came on here to try and sort it out, is because I would like to know what happened. (hack, virus, bug) And I would like to know how to keep it from ever happening again. I'll go ahead and run the virus scan and get back to you guys. Thanks for writing back so quick.

Thanks for your details. If there is a transaction leaving your wallet then that is quite a telltale. As you didn't send it then the only way that transaction would have been created was for somebody else to do so. This could either be:

From your description it looks probable that once the wallet was emptied it was deleted to attempt to cover their tracks. There is nothing in the UI to delete a wallet (well there used to be but not for over a year) so this would most likely be done using a File explorer or programmatically.

MultiBit would then create a new multibit.wallet with a new address which I believe is what you experienced.

The fact that you had a copy of your addresses to crosscheck against a block explorer is the reason you spotted the address the bitcoin was sent to. Unfortunately it is unlikely you will be able to track down who controls this address - the person that stole the MtGox money was never identified and there were a lot of resources spent trying.

If you have any other bitcoin wallets on your machine then I would move the bitcoin off just in case. The most recent malware I have seen scoops up Bitcoin Core, Electrum and MultiBit wallets en masse so you probably cannot trust that machine with bitcoin for the moment.

rucksack424 commented 9 years ago

Thanks for replying so fast. I ran a scan it here is what it came back with. scan I'm moving everything I have to a different location. It didn't think it was a hacker just because it has been almost 2 weeks and it still has not moved from that address. That was when I came up with the bug export theory. As I said before, its painful to lose that much, but all I'm after now is the piece of mind that it won't happen again. Thanks for your help.
