Using 'meta_data' both as named argument and DB field #1

I've harmonised the use of "meta_data" to describe the dictionary-type field containing meta data. I've changed the documentation where relevant.

Hi Marco,

I have manually merged in your changes as I removed the function.rst file as the docs are now within the code.

Sphinx is then used with ReadTheDocs to displays the documentation. The link is on the README.md page

If you pull the new master branch you should see these.
