DSD content in wavpack plays as PCM on DSD capable DACs #1860

Describe the bug

DSD content in wavpack plays as PCM on DSD capable DACs. Tested two different DSD capable DACs. When playing DSF file then DACs displays "DSD" but when playing DSD content from wavpack file then DACs displays PCM and sampling rate. The same wavpack files played from jriver or neutron players on the same DACs are played as "DSD" (not an issue with the wv file). The "dop" is enabled in MPD config.

Expected Behavior

Wavpack with DSD content should be played as DSD on a DSD capable DAC.

Actual Behavior

Wavpack with DSD content is played as PCM on DSD capable DAC.

You're not using the Wavpack decoder plugin but the FFmpeg decoder plugin, and FFmpeg cannot decode DSD as-is.

Have you tried explicitly disabling ffmpeg?

@owl770 no, disabling FFmpeg does not help at all, because

  1. FFmpeg is only ever used as fallback, so if it gets used, it means no other decoder plugin could handle it (or all other relevant plugins were disabled)
  2. @t0maz disabled the WavPack decoder plugin at compile time - look at his plugin list, it's not there - no matter what you do, the WavPack decoder won't help you because it doesn't exist - only a rebuild of MPD helps

Thanks @owl770 and @MaxKellermann for your feedback. I can confirm now that the MPD binary wasn't linked with libwavpack. The MPD binary came from the "brew" repository and I hope to find some time to report this problem with their MPD formulae.

Meanwhile, I've fetched dependencies and MPD sources and made my build. Wavpack was found during configuration and all is working fine now (DAC displays DSD). Many thanks for your help guys!
