The languages menu looks like this...

With the following Sites settings:

IMO, it'd look nicer if all languages names were capitalized.

I changed the behavior in the latest version (3.0.0 for Craft 4):

Show the languages in the current Control Panel language with the native name after (same behavior as the language menu in the Sites Settings page)

So, in this case, it would show "French – français" instead of "français".
