No more tables in search results #75

This has been discussed in #59 and #60 , but there was feedback on the list about this as well. The goal would be to provide search results that scale better than tables. This is prime opportunity to improve how we show the results (icons, etc.) to make the the display as tight and concise as possible.

From user Noeck:

[...removing tables...] would lead to a more responsive design which also seems to be your aim. Furthermore:

  • The title could be bold (or title-like), like here [1] already
  • The word and link "preview image" is superfluous
  • The downloads could use symbols for pdf and midi and waste less space (fontawesome?)
  • The licences could be indicated by cc icons
  • The more information does not really provide more, it just uses even more space for the same information, so I would suggest one of these options: a) less information in listings b) more information in detailed pages c) no detailed pages at all

A sample image from Noeck was provided via personal email: mutopia

Noeck mentions fontawesome but many of these icons are represented in the bootstrap glyphicon set.

I definitely agree that some less table-heavy version of this is the way to go. Using icons is a good idea for conciseness. (although PDF-letter and PDF-a4 icons might be tricky...) Maybe have a "Download" drop down menu for each result that has all the download options in it? (or even use a "down arrow" icon instead of "Download"?) That would save space and allow full text descriptions that could still distinguish between e.g. ".ly file" and ".ly files (zipped)"

Noeck's example seems promising for a preview image view. Showing preview images and not showing them are such different cases... they might warrant separate layouts/designs that are especially tailored to each case. Without the preview images each result might fit on one line or maybe two?
