Art Style #20

@walterthearchitect and I were talking, and we need to figure out the style the game is going to be represented in. Not necesarrily make the graphics as realistic as possible, I don't know if we realistically have the ability to do so quite yet. But we've been tossing around some ideas. -Cel Shaded -Like a painting, slightly impressionist. -make it look like you're playing somewhat concept sketches. -make it look like you're in a storybook of the events. Cutscenes could be like flipping pages, and the graphic style could be detailed in the same fashion. Use the graphics fidelity and focus as a way of pointing the players in the direction they want to go. The path ahead would be more highly detailed, with the less important areas being slightly more impressionistic and less saturated color-wise.

I agree with the storybook idea. I was thinking that the cut scenes could be like that. I'm a little between that and trying to close to real. I think the storybook thing would be really cool because that's what we're telling... a story. So lets go with that for stuff like the cut scenes.

As far as the realism of character models and stuff I think we can do something pretty close to real. Maybe not as good as the big guys but we can get free models and people textures. We can cheat on this a little bit and just modify the same one a few times to get different people. @dakdaros I don't know how good you ar with realism but I have seem some of your fantasy work and I think you could do a decent job at some non-human things. Regardless, there are a lot of free resources out there for stuff like this and once we get a solid foundation I have a guy or two that might be interested in helping us out with the realism aspect of things.

They don't need to be high end real but I think we can pull this off without too much work. Also, I think making sketches look good might be tougher because there are less resources out there for it and we would have to do everything from scratch.

One thing that we really do need to do is we need to come up with a UI theme. I did some arrows for the character select screen over the weekend just playing around and I realized that we didn't have a UI theme. So I was thinking about this and ideally I would like to have 4 themes and the theme you get depends on the race you choose. This would just be for things like your buttons and borders on text boxes and stuff. That being said I think that's a lot of work to do to start with. I was thinking we should go with something that looks like it represents the Humans of the 8th century. What that is, i'm not sure, but I think that would fit nicely into the game. Also, I think this should be sketch style. So when people are talking and stuff it looks like it's coming from the book.

On the realism note, most things we do are going to be easy, like buildings, landscape, etc. The only difficult part is going to people/animals but only the ones from Earth. The rest will be pretty easy I think. I mean, I did an entire solar system in about an hour or so and it looks pretty real. The hardest part was getting the sun to glow correctly.

I think the biggest time saver here will be doing the sketch book/story book thing for the cut scenes. I have done something like real cut scenes for before and they aren't hard, they just take forever to do and get right. What I haven't done, that would need to be done if we went the real route for cut scenes, is lip syncing... That would be a real pain.

In short I think you guys have a great idea with the story book cut scenes and I think we should use that. Also, I think we should make all the story chat and the GUI as a whole kinda look like it came from the story book. The only thing that I we differ on is the gameplay LaF (look and feel). I think it should be as real as we can do.
