Stores reorganization #1161

Some stores files might be trying to handle too much in each file and sometimes makes it unclear as to what the purpose of the file is. Consider maybe separating the logic into even more specialized files.

Addressed by #1179. Closing this, but we can reopen if we find that it's not enough.
