We should adjust the sleeping schedule to accommodate for the time lost when one falls off schedule. It will help deal with the emotional problems of the day, and it will also help retain memory. Sleep deprivation affects short and long term memory, so if the astronauts can instantly remember what they need to do, they will be more effective.

Hi Charles, good work! That said there are some issues. When working on a professional project, you should always use scholarly or expert-based sources. You'll find howsleepworks.com includes it's own disclaimer -

This is not a scholarly work, and I have not provided detailed references for all the points and claims it contains. However, it is based, as far as possible, on current and generally accepted information from both primary and secondary sources, and I have included a source list of at least some of the many books and websites I have consulted in its making.

Neither am I a sleep professional of any sort - not a qualified doctor, neurologist, psychologist or even anthropologist - merely an informed layman with access to the Internet and a library. I have included some general pointers on sleep hygieneClick for more information on sleep hygiene and a brief summary of the major sleep disordersClick for more information on sleep disorders, but if you have questions about a specific sleep problem, you would be better served going to your local doctor or consulting an accredited sleep disorder clinic in your area.

While the saying 'everyone knows this' works fine if you're working on a personal project, in our context it simply won't fly. Aside from that, this is one of the few cases we don't want to consider the "why."

"Sleep deprivation affects short and long term memory, so if the astronauts can instantly remember what they need to do, they will be more effective." only offers insight into why astronauts should sleep well, not whether or not it is necessary to dynamically correct a sleep schedule for slip ups.

Really the answer is simpler than it seems - what we are looking for is along the lines of

Think about the constraints around the problem. If there is something we don't know, then we need to ask the question!

Good Work.
