Identify aircraft platform tracks data for 3-5 Campaigns #577

Closed heidimok closed 9 months ago

Context

EPIC: Visualize aircraft flight path for 3 Campaigns in CASEI #576

In order for us to display platform tracks on the CASEI UI, we need to gather additional data. We currently don't store flight tracks on our backend.

Goal

To identify flight tracks for at least 3 CASEI Campaigns (3-5 campaigns could be a good start)

Data Gathering Criteria:

*There is a risk that the data will be difficult or extremely slow to access. This would delay any development from starting.

Steps

Acceptance Criteria

How should we share the data? To be discussed. We can create a folder or create a spreadsheet to link to data if it's on the cloud.

this would be another ticket, but @als0076 will be able to assist with identifying what campaigns' nav data are vs are not available that we need to request from Ames....

This is a related data gathering issue: https://github.com/NASA-IMPACT/ADMG-project/issues/878

I think i put comments on wrong card at first, so copy/pasting here:

Here's a few we can target first - not really in any particular order - see also Ashlyn's sheet w/ links.

Note: I'm especially familiar w/ OLYMPEX (worked with data from this campaign in my postdoc), and quite a bit familiar w/ HS3 (was in field for one deployment) & IMPACTS (most recent) -- if that is helpful for context/perspective -- but would be good I think to include data from and ASDC campaign here since that DAAC has so much airborne data

HS3 (GHRC)

IMPACTS (GHRC)

ACTIVATE (ASDC)

CAMP2Ex (ASDC)

OLYMPEX (GHRC)

could maybe rank/prioritize these as:

1 - IMPACTS or OLYMPEX 2 - CAMP2Ex 3 - ACTIVATE 4 - HS3 5 - IMPACTS or OLYMPEX

I realize this is more than we first mentioned -- am giving several could focus on first in case it seems one is easier than others or one gives more issues

Thanks @als0076 and @smwingo for the starter leg work on identifying which campaigns have flight tracks, and what to prioritize.

In the same Spreadsheet, I'm going to add a new sheet that focuses just on the 5 campaigns we will prototype this PI.

I/we will need to actually figure out how to download all of the data for each campaign's deployment's platforms and organize it in a way that makes sense. I'll start looking at each DAAC site to see how far I can get. But I'll probably reach out if I get lost or need help.

@smwingo Would you be able to create a folder to store the prototype data for this feature? It'll be better being in an IMPACT folder than me created one on my end. Then I'm going to manually download some of the flight tracks data so that we can test/play around.

should be good place -- lmk if any access issues or if more ppl need to be added.

ashlyn to help with gathering the examples actual files per aircraft

tricky to think about how to visualize for one and all the casei campaigns....

smwingo commented 9 months ago

ideas thru the discussion on 26 Oct deep dive...

also locate as many "scorecards" as possible ... would be great to give 1-2 sentence overview of the flight day/event for when that day is highlighted on map of tracks

and then....add satellite op info - at least for nadir points

I just changed this issue to focus on identifying the data (which we have done) as I didn't realize that actually accessing it would require more effort/time. So I will add a new issue for sprint #2 focused on accessing the data we need from this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14vleSOggRQFfyT_wgvCGGlVpkpwzGiKM-ZPYE7xFjkQ/edit#gid=1224749507 (tab 2)
