Google Earth Engine doesn’t have the storage to host all of the HLS data. GEE doesn’t really have a timeline for increasing storage.
2024-08-22 SNWG SEP Weekly Meeting Kevin Horn is leading negotiations on Google Earth Engine and wants to know about important program considerations. Action: Pontus to speak with Kevin Horn about GEE
Context: SERVIR wants to know others are using GEE. GEE is moving to a pay model. Pontus has requested that if SERVIR finds out more about how others are using GEE and if they are going to change how they use it in response to this change. The charge model may make it easier to use GEE. Smaller agencies may come to us to use and say "we'd be happy to use, but don't want to pay for it." The question: can we pay for usage access for these smaller agencies on their behalf.
Ongoing research: how will the model work, can we assist smaller agencies, etc.
Haven't heard anything about when they'll copy the HLS data over yet. Heard in Assessment interviews that some agencies will have a hard time using the data if it's not in GEE. (specifically HLS 10m)
Topic
What can be done to facilitate SNWG solutions on GEE in general?
Ultimate Goal
We know that users want data available on Google Earth Engine. We do not fully know how we can help that happen.
