Hi Mentors! Here is a status update for the Champions Cohort starting April 3, following our Mentor Call last week.

Signups: As of today we have 5 Champions Teams signed up: working with data from LP DAAC, OB.DAAC, LAADS, and GES DISC. We can continue to push the deadline.

Teaching: Last week we shaped the Lessons more, and identified teachers for all but the lesson 1: Openscapes and Cloud Mindset. Details in our Champions Calendaring Spreadsheet, with teachers identified. We will work with you to prep for teaching.

May 29th works for me but I would only be comfortable presenting on the cookbook portion. I'm actually wondering if May 15th would be better to incorporate the cookbook walkthrough among the open communities and coding strategies with Bri and Mahsa? Thoughts? May 29th has budgeting/time/space for the cloud, which is not my expertise, and may need a whole day to itself. Who were the people excited about conveying budget and cloud infrastructure information?

jules32 commented 8 months ago

That sounds great about the Cookbook Cassie! That's also a good idea about May 15 if that would work out time-wise with their lessons.

We'll be able to cover the budgeting/time/space in the Cloud part; our new Cloud Team Member will be putting together more resources/slides about this in the next few months :)

Re: @andypbarrett @alexishunzinger would you be available to teach May 1 When to Cloud

I think @andypbarrett has a better grasp on the computing details so would be my first choice for presenter. However, I am happy to fill in if he can't take it on that day!

What is the time slot? I have a mentors call scheduled for 11 to 12:30 am on May 1. I this the same thing? If so, I can do it.

jules32 commented 8 months ago

Yes it is the same time - the Champions Calls will "takeover" our Mentors Calls in April and May.

I am double checking my availability for Apr 17 (there is a visit 4/16-17 I am supporting for PODAAC but i am trying to see if i can be available 10-1130am PT for this!).

For the Cloud Clinic, how much time do we want to allocate for this sesssion? Looks like we have 2 "slots" in the 2nd cohort. Is that 1 hour?

Cloud Clinic Session ideas:

  1. I was thinking of starting off with one of the cloud cheatsheets/roadmaps to introduce the NASA cloud concept, and why we're walking through a cloud notebook in the first place - set the context (~10 min)
  2. Brief orientation around the cloud hub (what it is, spinning it off/selecting instances, what's in the Lab, how to use it) (~15 min)
  3. Walk through the clinic notebook; this can/will include talk about about earthaccess (🙌) and how it can be used (~30 min). Are there other pieces about earthaccess that we want to cover (besides the examples we have in the clinic notebook?) @betolink and others?

What do you all think?

jules32 commented 8 months ago

Hi @ScienceCat18, here was the 2023 Cloud Clinic (Champions Call 4 Agenda); you can see how Amy designed it and reuse as much as you can! I also copied her teaching content into this 2024 Cloud Clinic (Champions Call 2 Agenda) doc that you can work in - feel free to edit/delete/add but so you don't have to start from scratch.

She had:

We can also schedule a Dry Run the week before if you'd like!

Happy Monday - A brief update about the Champions Cohort kicking off April 3! We have 4 teams confirmed so far OpenscapesParticipants [ 2024-nasa-champions ] [ not linked for privacy] 🎉. We know a few teams are working on their nominations for tomorrow and we can keep nominations open past that if need be. We also have the teaching calendar shaping up, thank you! We’ll plan/discuss more during our Wednesday Mentors Call. On Wednesday we’ll also welcome Andy Teucher, review earthdata webinar survey, and discuss AGU workshop submissions.

Status Update Mar 20: - today we reviewed the OpenscapesCalendering [ 2024-nasa-champions ] together.

jules32 commented 7 months ago

Hi All!

We've had intro calls with most of the Champions teams; they are great and diverse teams (interests, science questions/applications, and skills) and are excited for the Cohorts.

01_CallAgenda [ 2024-nasa-champions ] is in our Cohort Folder (which we will share with Champions next week, see below)

Next steps for Call 1 on April 3:

We are tracking setup and todo's for Champions Cohorts in this Project Board - @stefaniebutland created these issue templates and made the associated repository a template so that we can transport them to different GitHub Organizations (this one originated in https://github.com/openscapes/cohort-planning)

@jules32 Roles for call 1 look good

ScienceCat18 commented 7 months ago

@jules32 reviewed Closing section of 01_CallAgenda and the "homework" for call 2 (github and EDL accounts) looks good. I think that's all that should be needed. But i will be working on call 2 workflow and notebook starting soon and can make any updates if needed.

Should we use nbgitpuller for the Cloud clinic notebook on call 2, or is there a new better way from the 2i2c Hub, that i may have missed? We can also discuss this at the dry run on 4/8.

jules32 commented 7 months ago

Thanks for reviewing @ScienceCat18 !

good question about nbgitpuller for the Cloud Clinic. I think Amy, Luis, Aaron, Bri, will have most current ideas/experience there. We can discuss on 4/8 for sure.
