WorldWind Update #201

Open jonathanagustin opened 4 years ago

jonathanagustin commented 4 years ago

On the website it says:

"Update on up and coming releases of NASA WorldWind February 26, 2020

Dear WorldWind Community,

Here is a quick update on our progress with the latest WorldWind release which is now just a few weeks away."

It's June 23, 2020 - how long is a few weeks away?

I'm asking because our software relies on WorldWind and there is a deadline to replace it if there isn't a new release.

Thanks! ---Jon

Unfortunately, our website is being updated and is not current, sorry about that.

Software release approval has been delayed due to a number of factors, chiefly the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Also, while addressing the new software assurance requirements, we encountered many unexpected gaps after my original time estimate in Feb. We have passed some major hurdles. We are close. We hope to have these approvals and release in the July timeframe.

Of course, we are working diligently to expedite the process wherever possible, but it will take time to assemble the required protocols. In the meantime, I am looking into having this new software approval process streamlined to make it more manageable, thereby benefiting our customers’ timelines.

On the website as of today I can read that

"Dear WorldWind Community,

New software releases have been delayed due to a number of factors including COVID-19. However, we hope to release the latest version in the July timeframe. We appreciate the support and your patience during this unprecedented time. For further inquiries, please refer to our contact us page."

So it's promising.

So glad to see an update to this very useful code base. I think I first used WorldWind as far back as 2007 and then again around 2014. Had a couple of looks at it in last three years, but felt that the risk of no support was too great - hope to dive in again now that it is being actively maintained.

Does anyone know if there are any roadmap for the future WorldWind releases ?

markpet49 commented 3 years ago

@FJBDev At the moment, we are focusing on tech debt, customer support, and server upgrades. We hope to solidify our current plans in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.
