Possible GeoServer related issue: GEOS-6169: Issue reading the sampleImage layer at lower zoom levels
Possible GeoServer related issue: GEOS-6583: Failure reading zoomed out worldimage
It is unknown what the incompatibility is between JAI and the JPEG/WorldImage data store. As it is, there isn't anything to "fix". However, two actions were taken to address this issue in the Linux distributions:
When JAI is installed (in Linux/Ubuntu), layers created from JPEG WorldImage data stores throw exceptions when zoomed out from the native resolution.
Using the LayerPreview, initially a blank image appears and an exception (below) is thrown. Zooming in on the image to its approximate native resolution results in the display of the layer and the cessation of the exceptions. Panning the layer works at this zoom level.
This is occurring in both WWSK 0.5.0-SNAPSHOT and GeoServer 2.12.1. In both instances, jai-1.1.3 and jai_imageio-1.1 were installed and the jai* jars were removed from geoserver's libs folder.
