Added tests for the backend

I added a few small changes with PR #51 I'm wondering if coverage should be in requirements.txt. In npm's package.json there is also dev-dependencies, is there something similar for python that we can use that indicates that it is only a dependency for development?

Oh yeah, we should run these tests in the github actions too!
