Enter Rosebud Mining District Files into ResourceSpace #26

Open emilyodean opened 4 years ago

emilyodean commented 4 years ago

There are 9 boxes of Rosebud Mining District Files at the top of the stairs at GBSSRL. Metadata for these needs to be entered into the resourcespace system (collections.nbmg.unr.edu). I'm attaching the most current set of instructions on entering the metadata to this ticket. These instructions assume that a google form is being used, so will need to be updated (separate ticket for that).

Need 200 documents entered/scanned by Sept 1 2020 for NGGDPP. metadata_instructions_mining_districts.docx

emilyodean commented 4 years ago

@madsmiller I'm assigning this to you now but we'll probably need to get started on it next Tuesday since I won't be at GBSSRL tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow, please spend about half of your time continuing to go through David's boxes and identifying Nevada documents, spend some time reading the metadata instructions above, and log into collections.nbmg.unr.edu (let me know if I didn't already set you up with a login - if so just email and I'll send over credentials) and experiment with adding records and look up some documentation on ResourceSpace (the platform that the website is based on). This will be a large part of what you're working on for the next few months so having a solid understanding of this is needed. If you have any time leftover you can go back to David's project.

madsmiller commented 4 years ago

@emilyodean Sounds good. It appears as if I already have a login, so I think we are good to go there. Thank you!

Steps to Scanning Documents into Resource Space.docx

emilyodean commented 4 years ago

@madsmiller and @lweeks20 - please spend 15-20 minutes QA'ing each others work when Mads gets in each day at 12:30. That'll give you time to discuss changes if needed and address any issues before you enter more files in.

A couple of new workflow procedures to note for QA:

Note that ONLY the person reviewing should be marking the QA as complete.

Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions on this for tomorrow!

Thanks Mads, this looks good! Would you mind adding a little bit about the commodities entry (that values should autopopulate, but you can enter your own if necessary) and a short section describing the QA steps I mentioned above? Thanks!

madsmiller commented 4 years ago

@emilyodean Yes, I will do that when I get in today!

File Entries + Discrepancies.xlsx

@emilyodean Okay so I went through the list of all the files that have been entered thus far. This is the list I made. It shows the entered file numbers in green, the missing ones in red, and ones in which the number was used twice in yellow. I wanted to do this before adding more. I figure it's better to fix the problems earlier than later.

emilyodean commented 4 years ago

@madsmiller - thanks so much for the thorough QA and posting the documents! I think that how you are doing it is perfect - going through and making corrections/taking notes, and then correcting the ID discrepancies afterwards.

Do you have a time estimate on when this portion of the work will be finished (QA of Logan's work, reassigning IDs)? I only ask because we're planning on creating a digital exhibit in the next week or two for publicizing the GBSSRL and I will likely have some tasks for you related to that. Maybe we can get you started on that next week.

Thanks!!!

madsmiller commented 4 years ago

@emilyodean Hi Emily. Sorry for the late response. Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to see how many I could get through today before trying to give you an answer. I am going to guess it will probably take me 1-2 working days to finish up getting through what I have with me. However it may only end up taking one more day. I can let you know where I stand after tomorrow!

Here is the updated word doc. Nevada Mining District Files QA.docx

madsmiller commented 4 years ago

@emilyodean - I went through and QA'd the files that I have with me/could find. There are a small few that I did not find, but I could have just missed them. I updated the spreadsheet to reflect any changes I made and to account for entered files. The files that are listed that aren't QA'd were either entered by me or are probably at the GBSSRL. There are a few duplicate files listed that I did not change the IDs for because the files themselves are not with me so if I change their corresponding file ID, we may have trouble finding them in the future when we search back at the GBSSRL. As for the QA, I did not select "All QA Complete" because I wanted to check with you on that first. If you would like me to complete those, I can go back in at some point and do that. I am pretty sure I QA'd everything that was entered so far by Logan.

Anyways, here are the updated documents:

emilyodean commented 4 years ago

@madsmiller, today I'd like you to upload all of the mining district files to ResourceSpace that you performed the ADA accessibility remediation on. On the metadata page, the only thing you'll need to enter is the matching ID from the document, select the mining district files collection, and make sure that the box under "Upload Options" that says "Do not import embedded EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata for this upload" is NOT checked. That last option means that it'll just automatically upload the name that you assigned it when you added the ADA accessibility features. We'll get the rest of the metadata uploaded later.

I made a zoom video just in case the above isn't clear. I also went ahead and uploaded the first two for example. https://unr.zoom.us/rec/share/2I9bDLrg2G5IWa_Ny2iGUKNwHdr0X6a8g3Mb-6ULmEse7utdQJ7JSdr4uzOzgTb3?startTime=1590516954000

On 7/28 and 7/29, I got to the end of the box I have been working on entering. Then I started going back through and marking the individual folders so that we know what files they contain. In addition I checked collections and made sure that there weren't any missing files. If there were, I entered them. Any files that needed information corrected or added, I did that as well. 60008471-60008484 were entered.
