Feature request: Forward Operator for Ionosphere-Thermosphere Models #457

Use case

What are you trying to accomplish? Sometimes there may already be a way to do what you need.
I'm working data assimilation for space weather and find some general issue in the forward operator for ionosphere-thermosphere models.

The current forward operator is designed for and tested by WACCM-X. Some discrepancies in the unit and format of the initial files of different models (TIE-GCM, GTIM, and WACCM-X) might cause issues in the future. For example, the ion density in the WACCM-X is in the mixing ratio, while the ion density in the TIE-GCM is in number density. So the forward operator of these two models cannot be shared.
