Port the NCL mjo family of functions, including: Mjo_wavenum_freq_season, mjo_cross, mjo_spectra, mjo_xcor_lag_season, mjo_phase_background. mjo Calculates various MJO spectra.

Hi could you let me know the progress on the MJO routines as it should probably be a high priority? @bitterbark

anissa111 commented 1 year ago

Hi @swrneale, thank you for expressing interest in this set of functions, doing so really helps us prioritize community requests!

Currently there is a developer in the early stages of research for implementing these functions here and this family of functions is highest in the queue to receive active development from backlogged items.

Watching this issue will give you the most up-to-date info on development.

anissa111 commented 1 year ago

@swrneale @bitterbark, do you have a use case you're actively looking to incorporate these functions in to? If so, providing any information you could about your use case(s) would be of great use to the team!

swrneale commented 1 year ago

We have lots of use cases that generally center on global CESM or CAM (uncoupled) simulations with global CAM output at a generally low resolution (1 deg). File data consists of single 2D (lat x lon) fields that can have daily averaged data points covering anything from 1 month to 1 year on a single file. In general it would be something from a 5 to 30 year simulations and involve the output fields of precipitation (PRECT) outgoing longwave radiation (FLUT) and lower tropospheric 850-mb zonal wind (U850). The existing ncl MJO suite is run on this data ecology and produces the suite of output images shown on the ncl web page. Let me know if you need more info. Rich

bitterbark commented 1 year ago

If you want a very specific use case, we have an MJO analysis package that calls ncl scripts (mjo_*.ncl) in this directory. We are aiming to replace the ncl functions called in the scripts with python.

Thank you both for the info! This will be very useful. I anticipate more active research and development will begin in the next week or so following the end of the AMS conference

I am currently working on this, and am getting up to speed so that when I talk with Jon Gottschalck at NOAA/NWS/NCEP, I can ask him some informed questions as I try to find out if he or someone in his department has implementations we can borrow or use as a starting point. If either @bitterbark or @swrneale would like to chat for an hour or so some Friday so I can ask some questions to clarify some things I couldn't pull from context in my reading on the topic, I would appreciate the help.

bitterbark commented 1 year ago

Fridays aren't great for me (I work Wed & Thurs) but I could do a short meeting in the afternoon if that's the only option.

swrneale commented 1 year ago

Remind us to chat about this today maybe.

I'm working on making a gap in my Thursday next week. I will contact both of you, once the interviews I'm running stop taking up my midweek afternoons. @swrneale @bitterbark

bitterbark commented 1 year ago

I'm free from 12-2 next Thursday afternoon, so Friday would be ok too.
