Putting this "On Pause" for now since the external cmaps package was updated.

Noting that some folks over at Argonne have starting putting together a cmweather library currently under the openradar org, but intended as a community resource. This could also be a good path forward.

Chatted with Max Grover a bit about this at SciPy and have an issue open on their repo to start the discussion.

FWIW, this is the same library Anissa had shared a link to a little while back.

Colormaps (e.g. customization, use of NCL colormaps, etc.) are also items that have now come up in the context of the CUPiD project.

There's not an open issue on that repository, but this is one on ADF (atmosphere diagnostics) here: https://github.com/NCAR/ADF/issues/292

If there's bandwidth, this would be good to look into again whether it's dev here or elsewhere.
