I have replicated the issue with some sample MODIS L2 data, and am seeing the same mostly 0 data field.

For debugging I have changed the obs_gridded_dataset to include both parameter_data and parameter_count, with the _count being the number of L2 data values contributing to a grid cell (git pull develop_swath for this). The count field for our particular 1x1 grid ranges between about 0 - 100. The swath counts look OK to me (plot attached), so I agree that this is most likely a scaling, clipping, or grid field normalization issue. Am going to add additional debugging info in the grid_util module...
