ES_NIF : (Spain) Personal Tax Identification Number

In Spain there are NIF's, this is the generic tax identification number applicable to both Spanish citizens and foreign individuals or entities conducting business in Spain. For Spanish citizens, the NIF is identical to their DNI number and for foreigners it is identical to their NIE. For more information look here .

• Importance of Detecting and Protecting ES_NIF :

a NIF is necessary for natural persons, legal persons and non-legal entities that will be involved in any tax related transaction in Spain. This is particularly important as all liable taxpayers will have to include their Tax Identification Number in all the self-assessments, declarations, communications or writings that they submit to the Tax Administration.

Detection Steps :

Since the NIF number is the same as the NIF number you can detect it using the DNI pattern for citizens and the NIE pattern for foreigners:

• The DNI format is 8 digits followed by a letter (example: 12345678A). The same number is used for one's driver's license. There are two other classes of DNI for citizens of Spain:

  • 'K' (example: K12345678A) for children under 14 who are Spanish residents.
  • 'L' (example: L12345678A) for Spanish citizens who live outside Spain.

• ES_NIE follows a specific pattern which is a letter (X, Y, or Z), followed by seven digits, and ending with another letter Example - X1234567A
