Residents of Italy are required to have a unique form of identity. Italy's Codice fiscale is the official name for the fiscal code card. It is comparable to the Social Security Number used in the US. A Codice Fiscale is given to Italian citizens upon birth. On the other hand, a foreigner can get one by asking the Italian government for one. A 16-character alphanumeric code specific to each person is called a codice fiscale. Preventing fraud and identity theft is essential. A three-letter surname, the first three consonants of the person's name, five characters, the birthdate and gender, the town of birth, and a check character are all used to establish each unique Codice Fiscale.
