I recently encountered this era with one of my test inputs, taken from conversations with other researchers: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/25552162/tarfile-readerror-file-could-not-be-opened-successfully
According to these posts, double compression could be responsible. Lo the file was double-compressed.
The system currently silently fails in the back if this happens. We should find out a better way to ensure the integrity of the archive file.
