Matt to follow up with Peter Pulsifer on joining the Arctic Data Committee.

Emailed Pulsifer on 2018-06-06:

Dear Peter,

As we discussed at the SCADM meeting, I would like to request that the NSF-funded Arctic Data Center (https://arcticdata.io) become a member of the IASC/SAON Arctic Data Committee. The Arctic Data Center is responsible for preserving Arctic data from NSF-funded programs, and we feel strongly that to effectively do so we need to be interoperable with other polar data centers and aggregators. We also contribute to data federation efforts within DataONE, and focus on how to efficiently build tools for data management that can operate across systems and organizational boundaries. The Arctic Data Center would be interested in contributing to the work of the committee, and would involve various individuals in ADC activities:

If this is approved, then the following people would continue to be involved, and possibly other staff as appropriate:

Matthew Jones, Arctic Data Center PI (jones@nceas.ucsb.edu)
    - data systems interoperability, semantics, governance
Amber Budden, Arctic Data Center co-PI (aebudden@nceas.ucsb.edu)
     - community engagement, education and training, governance
Mark Schildhauer, Arctic Data Center co-PI (schild@nceas.ucsb.edu)
    - data semantics and interoperability
Kathryn Meyer, Arctic Data Center (meyer@nceas.ucsb.edu)
    - community engagement and outreach
Chris Jones, Arctic Data Center (cjones@nceas.ucsb.edu)
    - data systems architecture and interoperability, client tools software

Thank you for considering this request, and let me know if there is a more formal process for joining the committee.

Response from Pulsifer, awaiting official ratification:

Dear Matt,

Thank you for your request. The Arctic Data Committee membership terms of reference indicate the "The ADC includes appointed representatives, however to ensure broad engagement and representation of the community, ADC is open to all interested and engaged individual and organizational participants". Your request indicates that you and your colleagues are clearly interested and engaged. In keeping with our process, I am copying your request to Stein Tronstad (Norway) and Marten Tacoma (Netherlands) who will work with me to review and approve the request. Following approval (I expect this over the coming day since the Executive is here in Davos together), we will plan to add the information that you provided to the ADC membership page.

General communications for the ADC are sent through the POLARDATA mailing list (https://nsidc.org/mailman/listinfo/polardata). If you are not already a member, please join. Note that we will be soon confirming our 2018 annual meeting that we expect to be in Geneva (WMO Headquarters) in November. We are working to avoid conflicts with other meetings.

Also note that wherever possible ADC efforts connect to SCADM and SOOS through a Memorandum of Cooperation, and I always make an effort to connect to the work of IARPC in practical ways.

cc: Jan Rene Larsen, SAON Executive Secratary ; Allen Pope, IASC Executive Director

Kind regards,

Peter
