Project update- staying involved! #2

Hello everyone,

This is Sydney from the Community Dynamics workshop. It has been a month since the workshop and was thinking an update was due.

A group of us are going further and setting objectives for what will be a paper on comparative metrics for long-term dynamics in ecological communities. Each of us are selecting and curating 1-3 long-term community datasets we are willing to work with personally and formulating at least one metric that is specifically temporal. These metrics can be previously defined, modified versions of, or original. Eventually, we want to push datasets, representing various taxon, through these metrics so that comparisons can be made, hopefully shedding light on current trends of stability across different communities.

If you are interested in participating, read on!

We will be sharing our ideas, papers, code via github. Following what has already been established in github, a folder will be made for each dataset. The folder should include at least the data, curating/formatting R scripts and code for metric(s), and any other relevant information that person wants to share. There will also be a metrics folder containing the final, highly commented code.

For those particularly audacious sorts, experimenting and documenting your work in Kepler is highly encouraged!

To get people brainstorming on metrics, I have outlined a list of potential metrics with relevant papers. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you the email. Later this month, we will have a Skype meeting to discuss our ideas. In the meantime, feel free create your folder in github if you have not done so already and share your work. I think you will also be able to reply to this “issue” with any other general comments and ideas.
