For the sake of simplicity I drafted a short tutorial in this repo's README on how to find / create issues (with good metadata). Embedded some images with HTML syntax so I could embed alt text simply. Also removed some of the default issue labels and added new ones for the five primary goals of the DEIJ Strategic Plan (see public version here) as those are likely to be useful in sub-dividing tasks.
Also spun up a Project (to which the issue was added) but left it pretty bare bones so that a larger group of the committee--than just me--could make organizational choices that feel intuitive to a larger subset of the DEIJ committee
Sent a Slack message to the #diversity Slack channel in the NCEAS org inviting people to weigh in on this issue if they wanted to team up and/or share feedback on the tutorial in the README (hello if that post is why you're seing this!). Need to give time for folx to share that feedback and identify further sub-tasks but as a guess I think the next sub-tasks will be something along the lines of the following:
Removed broken text coloration formatting. Tried to get the word "blue" to be blue but an HTML-format approach didn't work / made things look somewhat broken
Summary
As a committee we had discussed that it would be valuable to adopt a system for tracking our ongoing tasks. This would let people quickly identify where they could jump in and help out to maximum effect (and catch up on the progress on a given task up to that point). Many NCEAS people already use GitHub so we're hoping this reduces the "lift" of adopting this platform as our strategic zone.
