Beta Editor Submission Confirmation Messaging May Foster Complacency #459

The "Thank you" confirmation message one receives after successfully submitting a data package through the new Beta Editor is similar to the confirmation message from the current registry. I would like the language to be more direct about the need for submitters to stay engaged in corresponding with the data team throughout the processing phase. Active participation has been lacking.

Here is the current message:

I disagree that "No further action is required at this point." Instead, I would like it to be very clear that it is important for submitters to check their email inboxes for messages from support@arcticdata.io and for them to reply to these messages, fully answering our questions and in as timely a manner as possible.

I think language like "your continued engagement is needed" or "your submission has not been published yet, please be proactive about following up in order to fulfill NSF submission requirements" would be more appropriate.

Thoughts and messaging suggestions are welcome!

I like these ideas. Would it save any time to make it clear to the submitter that their program officer will not be able to see their new submission until they engage with the team via the email that's soon to come?

jagoldstein commented 6 years ago

Yes! I think that might get their attention.

Jesse, can you write up 1-2 sentences to replace the current text under the "Your dataset is under review..." title?

"This submission has not been published yet. Your continued engagement is needed in order to fulfill NSF requirements. Please be proactive about answering follow-up emails from support@arcticdata.io so that we can process and publish this data set as soon as possible. Your understanding and continued cooperation are greatly appreciated."

How's that sound?

amoeba commented 6 years ago

It sounds maybe a little stern. I modified your wording a bit but kept the intent pretty close:

Thank you for your submission! Your dataset is on its way to being published but you're not quite done. You will receive an email from support@arcticdata.io within {CHANGEME} hours so please look for that email and expect to follow up with us via email before your submission is published.

or some variant?

Optional addition:

If your submission is, in part, to fulfill a National Science Foundation reporting requirement, be aware that your program officer will not be able to see your submission until it has been moderated.

I like your version. To clarify, I still meant to include the "Thank you, your changes have been saved. Your data set is under review by the NSF Arctic Data Center team" before my language.

Below see Bryce's wording, but slightly tweaked:

"Thank you, your changes have been saved! Your data package is under review by the NSF Arctic Data Center team. It's on its way to being published but you're not quite done. You will receive an email from support@arcticdata.io within ~4 business hours, so please look for that and plan to follow-up with us in order to ensure that your submission gets published.

If your submission is, in any part, intended to fulfill a National Science Foundation reporting requirement, be aware that your program manager will not be able to see it until it has been moderated.

Your understanding and continued cooperation are greatly appreciated."

or some variant

Thanks Jesse and Bryce, I like the new message.

I would suggest changing the fourth sentence to:

You will receive an email from support@arcticdata.io within one business day. Please plan to respond to our emails in order to ensure that your submission gets published.

LGTM!

laurenwalker commented 6 years ago

Alright, I'll update the message for the new Editor, then!

jagoldstein commented 6 years ago

thanks @laurenwalker! and @amoeba for your input

I advocate for including the image button from the registry in the "Thank you" confirmation message.
