Meta-analysis of climate change impacts on marine taxa #14

Summary of Synthesis

Climate variability is a key factor regulating the abundance, distribution, and habitat use of marine species and populations, with implications for their exploitation and conservation. Hence, in addition to issues such as overfishing, pollution, and marine ecosystem degradation, scientists and managers need to consider the less studied impacts of climate change on, for example, fish survival, distribution, and fisheries. Understanding the likely impacts of global climate change on the resources and habitats in the Gulf of Mexico is particularly important given the large investment in restoration that will be made over the next several decades as a result of the settlement for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. I propose to conduct a meta-analysis of potential climate change impacts on various marine taxa, including fish, invertebrates, marine mammals, sea turtles, and elasmobranchs to identify the climate-driven changes that may have an impact on the reproductive success and survival of these various taxa, and to determine which of those climate change impacts may have more relevance for the management and conservation of these species and populations in the Gulf of Mexico over the next 30-40 years. The information generated by this analysis is critical for understanding how multiple climate-driven changes can potentially affect the desired outcomes of restoration projects aimed at enhancing marine species survival and reproductive success. This information will also facilitate efforts to enhance the resiliency of these species to future climate impacts in the Gulf of Mexico.

I am the one who proposed this project idea. However, I think that this project has similar objectives with the one proposed in the first project by Alexander Sacco. Perhaps would make more sense to discuss how to merge them?

@adellapa You can reference another project by its issue number, so in the case of the Sacco issue, you would link to issue #33.

@mbjones Thanks for the clarification
