Clear understating of the causes would be relevant to predict temporal and special distribution of algae blooms. Understating processes (biological, chemical, physical) and their interactions will be important in this endeavor. Biological data such algae species, reproduction mechanisms, and substrate used for growth would be required. Chemical data such as water quality, dissolved oxygen, pH, organic and inorganic compound directly related to algae blooms would be necessary. Physical processes such as temperature, water stratification would be essential.
Data gathered will undergo a regress process to make sure the data is valid and accurate. The biological, chemical, physical processes would be evaluated and their interactions would be examined to develop a model for algae bloom. One third of the data would be used to conduct sensitivity analysis, and a third for model prediction, and one third of data for model validation.
Needs
Expertise needed for this project are:
Knowledge in biological, chemical, physical processes
Data gathering protocol
Statistical data analyses, including data evaluation and sensitivity analyses
Modeling procedures, including sensitivity analysis, prediction and validation
Algae blooms presented significant problems to water quality in the Gulf, including periodic fish kills. To minimize the impact algae bloom on our ecosystem, we need to have a clear understanding of the causes. This project has the potential to be used as a tool in preventing or at least minimizing algae bloom occurrences. I am confident that this project has the potential to succeed, and would provide additional tools to combat algae bloom occurrences.
