Discovery: Linkback Bar #376

Opening this backlog ticket (for now) on the linkback bar and what we should do with it.

From analytics in the past, we know that it is not really clicked on or used. From a conversation with Lynn on 3/15:

  1. For sites on cancer.gov, we would like to remove the linkback bar as part of the release 1 roll-out. With the USWDS putting a link to cancer.gov in all of the footers, there seems to be no need for a linkback to be at the top of the page for microsites. This approach needs to be vetted by OCPL but it is our recommended approach at this time.
  2. For sites that are using the linkback who are not on the platform, we would eventually suggest they remove the linkback bar as they adopt the NCI DS (which we know is phase two of the project - making DS available to all sites). Likely needs a communications plan
  3. For sites like CRDC that need the linkback in order to showcase that their applications are part of a "suite" of applications and need to linkback to their informational (main CRDC) site, we still need to find a way to do so, and have the component in the NCI DS for that time (but is in phase 2 when we roll this out to all of NCI).

The C.gov and R4R linkbacks have been removed. The CRCD linkback is still in use and should be discussed with Anna for how to moveforward with those sites:

@welshja please confirm that the linkback bar does not exist anywhere, and then we can close this ticket. If it does exist, we will update this ticket to remove the linkback bar.

@andyvanavery31 - Linkback still is being loaded via Adobe Launch on the following sites:

@bennettcc - can you help review this with the client and coordinate conversations to approve removal?

@welshja @andyvanavery31 As discussed at 8/21 ODDC prioritization meeting:

1) We will not actively remove the linkback from https://deainfo.nci.nih.gov/. This site will be migrating into the c.gov digital platform in 2025. At this time, it will naturally lose the linkback bar. 2) Additional discuss will be required for to sites that use the data commons linkback version. As context, in summer 2023 these sites did not want to remove the linkback bar. ODDC should regroup to determine how to best engage with these sites to encourage removal of the bar (and possible adoption of NCIDS)
