This will generally be addressed with MPI runtime in https://github.com/NCPP/ocgis/issues/374. This sounds like a good benchmarking/optimization use case.

Serial and parallel performance enhancements are available in the https://github.com/NCPP/ocgis/tree/v-2.0.0.dev1 branch.
ocgis spatial mask is now stored as an independent output variable.
Spatial mask is still "hardened" into data variables but the spatial mask added by ocgis can be managed independently.
Option to not apply subset slice available in intersects method but not operations.
