I'm opening a draft PR so that I can comment on commits even before you're ready for a real review.

@norrec99 Look at my 2 recent commits to this branch (right above this comment). I think you'll now be able to see how I'm thinking about text alignment and making everything clearer. Notice the TODO comments.

I'll go ahead and approve this PR, merge into develop, and delete this branch. Then I'll create a new issue about what remains.
