I took a closer look, and this feature is already in place. It's just that hardly any DOIs have been entered for the publications in the system. Only one proper publication de la Fuente and Iturralde-Vinent, 2001 has a defined DOI, and it doesn't seem to be the primary publication for a calibrated node.
I've added a fake publication to my test calibration, with a DOI to show how this appears in the finished page. This link appears near the top of the page, with the link text [View electronic resource].
As you suggested, I've added this in a second place, alongside the 'recommended citation'. If a DOI is found, it will appear here as a hyperlink to the online publication. (We show the "bare" DOI, but the linked URL is a proper hyperlink.)
Just let me know if you want both of these links, or just one, or a different presentation.
Looks good - Jim's test link works. I haven't added any for PE yet because we don't have PE DOIs yet (or at least I need to get them from PE).
PE doesn't have DOIs. Historically we haven't had enough budget income to afford them (they are very expensive) or the staff to register them. However, we've had general discussions about getting them next year now that we have saved money from not having to print the journal to satisfy the old botanical code of nomenclature.
Understood. I believe the UI will accept (complete) URLs in lieu of DOIs in all cases.
Currently, we can add/edit citations, but there is not yet an option to link to the FCD papers. This would just be a link to the PE page where each paper permanently resides, rather than an actual PDF upload. The link should appear to the right of the "recommended citation" on the result page. It would be great to associate this link with the paper, so that for example we can enter the link for Benton et al. 2014 one time at that stage and not individually for all 80 calibrations.
