Herbarium #2 Lightbox Testing

• [x] • Move table from Bhupjit‘s office to your office
• [x] • Set up the copystand in your office
• [x] • Look into lightbox set ups at other institutions (Kew, RBGE)
• [x] • Create lightbox from available materials for testing (Nanlite Halo 16 available for experimentation)

• [x] • Download Capture One on a laptop for testing
• [x] • Test the following
• [x] o Height of camera to capture entire sheet
• [x] o Size of hole necessary to stay out of FOV
• [x] o Illumination with ring light vs. Light panels (can be borrowed from ALICE in room 411) to give even illumination across sheet
• [x] o Width of workstation –consider keeping piles in vs. having them outside of box (although I think it is preferred to keep them within)
• [x] o Idea of Computer screen on top of lightbox
• [x] o Ease of maintaining focus without autofocusing or intervening for materials of varying depths/thicknesses
• [x] • Parameters
• [x] o Entire Sheet and frame (extra magnets available in DaSSCo box at Herbarium C) visible in image
• [x] o Nothing infringing on FOV
• [ ] o Even illumination across sheet
• [x] o Works efficiently (not necessary to change focus manually between sheets)
• [x] o Ergonomic for user
• [x] o Safe for specimens

Purpose of lightbox testing, recap: • Attempt to decrease size of lighting setup. Particularly height. • Create a more mobile and universal setup for Herbarium sheets. • Attempt to separate lightbox from table, for increased mobility. • Create a setup which is more adaptable to use in other collections. • Improve ergonomics if possible, particularly in regards to PC. • Lower camera to make more accessible. Better able to control lighting in box Less light glare for digitisers Possibly able to mount screen above box

Rental equipment is arriving Tuesday 28/11 and testing will happen in the same week.

We presented preliminary findings of our tests at the DaSSCo Digitizer meeting on 14.12.2023, with a preliminary report. The main issue to still be solved is the lighting, for which further testing and help from experts is needed. After that, the setup might have to be redesigned.
