Background: The visual summary provided a useful overview of data in the ecosystem. It could potentially be incorporated into or serve as a basis for some sort of funding report for program officers. This summary was designed when there were two Types in the ecosystem: Datasets, ComputationalTools. Once ComputationalTools was tabled, the Visual Summary design became less intuitive to interpret and was removed prior to launch.
Considerations:
Per discussion with NIAID on 2023.09.26, the Visual Summary was prioritized as a high priority item due to its relevance to some sort of funding report that would be useful to program officers at NIAID and serve as a nice example to NIH. The original design provided a nice overview of the amount of records of different types (Dataset and ComputationalTools). While ComputationalTools, has since been removed, a new type (ResourceCatalog) is expected to be included.
Example use case of the ecosystem for Program Officers from Wilbert (~16 min mark in 2023.09.26 meeting):
If a program officer types in a grant number, they'll be able to see what data was generated from that grant
The program officer knows there's a grant where data must be submitted
They plug that number into the ecosystem and see what data is there from that grant
If they don't see any datasets, they can tell the PI to submit the data
If the PI's submit the data to any of the repositories captured by the ecosystem, presumably, when the program officer plugs the grant number in again, they should see that dataset
