Code refactoring #132

In order to improve re-usability and facilitate further development, some actions could be taken on the current version of the code:

[x] re-organization of the functions in a modular structure;
[ ] setup tests and continuous integrations;
[ ] make sure some minimal documentation is available;

For the latter two points, the NLeSC python template could be used.
