This PR corrects misspellings identified by the check-spelling action.

Thank you @jsoref for the extensive and considered spelling corrections! I have merged almost all proposed changes into develop, except the ones for reasons mentioned inline in your PR. I cannot merge the PR (because some things needed changes) but I have applied most commits from it to develop. Thanks again!
